Ransomware Attacks Third South Carolina School District

Over the last year, three different ransomware attacks have successfully infected three different South Carolina school districts.  The first reports of Horry County Schools being riddled with ransomware came in February of 2016.  That school district gained approval to pay the $8,500 ransom demand in order to restore their files.  Then, during the summer of 2017, Dorchester School District Two was hit with ransomware.  They too paid the ransom.  However, this time, it was $2,900.

Now, the Chester County School District has reported a ransomware infection that infiltrated their systems over the past weekend.  The ransomware variant that overran the school’s systems is not being released, nor is the ransom demand.  The school however did state they are working with their IT staff to restore the files using their backups.  Hopefully, their efforts will be successful, and they will not contemplate paying the ransom.

Other Ransomware Attacks

PC Matic has created an interactive map, see below, of the ransomware attacks that have taken place in the U.S.  By clicking on any one of the plotted areas, additional information will be provided including the name of the facility that was infected, the location, if they paid the ransom demands, and if so – how much.
